SCRA is pleased to announce the commissioning of a painting by Don Troiani in honor of the 150th Anniversary of the Signal Corps. The oil painting will be presented to the Chief of Signal in June of this year and then placed in our Signal museum for permanent display. The sales of our painting are going well but many have asked for an image other than our word description. Included above is an image of our finished painting. Prints are scheduled to start shipping towards the end of June 2010.

Description of painting

Our painting shows MG William T. Sherman, who we would call today the theater commander, standing next to his communications "node." The Signal station is at Cheves's Rice Mill on the Ogeechee river across from Ft McAlister outside of Savannah, GA. At the forefront is MG Sherman and MG Howard in final preparations for the land attack on Ft McAlister, the last major battle of the Savannah Campaign. He has directed that CPT James McClintock, his Signal Officer, (with long brass telescope), signal to BG William B. Hazen (who will become our 5th Chief Signal Officer) to commence the land attack on Ft McAlister. The exact quote is: "Signal Gen Hazen that he must carry the fort by assault. " BG Hazen signaled his response: "I am ready and will assault at once." On the signaling platform will be Cpl Samuel Magner with his wig wag flag. Also present are BG Orlando Poe who is MG Sherman's Chief of Engineers and LT Jacob Sampson, also a Signal Officer. In the distant background is the smoke from the bombardment of Ft McAlister.

This print is filled with Signal history and Mr Troiani has done us proud. Again, to see finished products of his work, go to www.historicalartprints.com. You will have no hesitation in ordering our Regiment's 150 year print.

Because of his lifelong extensive knowledge of military artifacts and excellent reputation, Troiani is regularly contacted by major museums and collectors from across the country who greatly value his first hand experience. He has appraised and authenticated collections for the Connecticut State Capitol, Connecticut State Library, Atlanta History Center (Atlanta Historical Society), Confederate Memorial Hall, New Orleans, auction houses and private individuals.

Other of his artifacts have been loaned for the exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution, Delaware Historical Society, Connecticut Museum of History, Pamplin Park, The West Point Museum, Virginia Historical Society and the National Park Service Visitors Center in Gettysburg, PA.

In 1995 he designed the three Civil War battlefield commemorative coins for the United States Mint. His work has also appeared on a U.S. postal card commemorating the 350th anniversary of the U.S. National Guard.
